What is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill, also known as a medical abortion, involves taking two medications in sequence to end an early pregnancy. The abortion pill has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for use during early pregnancy, typically up to 10 weeks of gestation. [U.S. Food and Drug Administration]

The first medication, mifepristone, blocks progesterone. Progesterone is a hormone the body needs to support a pregnancy. When progesterone is blocked, the pregnancy stops developing.

The second medication, misoprostol, is taken 24 to 48 hours later. This medication causes the uterus to contract and expel the pregnancy through vaginal bleeding and cramping.

Medical abortion is approved for use during the early stages of pregnancy, typically through 10 weeks of gestation.

Knowing how far along a pregnancy is can help determine whether abortion medication falls within medical guidelines.

How Your Body May Respond

The abortion pill causes physical changes in the body as the process begins. Many women experience symptoms as the body responds to the medication.

Common side effects may include:

• Vaginal bleeding that may be heavier than a normal period
• Abdominal cramping that may range from mild to intense
• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Headache or dizziness
• Fatigue
• Fever or chills for a short period

Each person’s experience can vary, and symptoms may differ in intensity.

Possible Risks to Understand

Like any medical process, the abortion pill also carries potential risks. Understanding these risks can help you make informed decisions about your health.

According to the Mayo Clinic, common side effects may include bleeding, cramping, nausea, and fatigue as the body responds to the medication. [Mayo Clinic]

Possible complications may include:

• Heavy or prolonged bleeding
• Incomplete abortion, when pregnancy tissue remains in the uterus
• Ongoing pregnancy, if the medication does not fully end the pregnancy
• Infection, which may involve fever, severe pain, or unusual discharge

In some cases, additional medical treatment may be required.

Knowing what symptoms are expected and what may require medical attention can help protect your health throughout the process.

Confirm Your Pregnancy First

Before taking abortion medication, it’s important to understand key medical details about your pregnancy. A medical confirmation can help determine how far along the pregnancy is, whether it is developing normally, and whether it is located safely in the uterus (ruling out an ectopic pregnancy). An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy develops outside the uterus and cannot be treated with abortion medication. According to the Mayo Clinic, this condition requires immediate medical attention. [Mayo Clinic]

Ordering Abortion Pills Online: Important Safety Considerations

Some websites advertise abortion pills that can be ordered online and shipped directly to your home. While this may seem convenient, it’s important to understand the potential risks.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cautioned against purchasing abortion drugs from unregulated online sources. Some websites operate outside the United States or without proper oversight.

Without medical evaluation, you may not know:

• how far along your pregnancy is
• whether the pregnancy is located in the uterus
• whether certain health conditions may make abortion unsafe

Having a medical professional review your health history and pregnancy can help protect your safety.

Not Everyone Is Eligible for the Abortion Pill

Abortion medication may not be recommended for everyone. Certain medical conditions, medications, or pregnancy situations may affect whether it is safe.

You may not be eligible if you:

• are further along in pregnancy than recommended guidelines
• have certain bleeding disorders
• take blood-thinning medications
• have certain chronic medical conditions
• have an IUD in place
• do not have access to emergency medical care if needed

A healthcare professional can help review your medical history and answer questions specific to your situation.
